Volunteer Mike Potts visited with four seafarers off the BAKKEN LADY last week. It was a sad tale. These guys had been on the ship for 11 1/2 months and they were scheduled to get off the ship FINALLY to return home to the Philippines. Unfortunately, there was a travel glitch and they were still on the ship, with no idea how long they would have to wait to return to their home country.
This is the truth of the article we posted yesterday:
“It is estimated that more than 300,000 seafarers and marine personnel are currently stranded at sea and unable to be repatriated despite the expiry of their contracts. A similar number of seafarers have been unable to join ships and relieve them.”
From the International Maritime Organization press briefing
The IMO Secretary -General calls this “a humanitarian crisis taking place at sea” and calls for action to “protect seafarers’ health and ensure the safety of shipping.”
