Christians at Sea

on .

"Texas Port Ministry exists to provide spiritual, physical and social care to the Freeport Harbor Community."  You've probably heard us say this multiple times.  It's who we are and what we do.  We reiterate it in our core values when we say "Spiritual care is the first priority."  We desire, first and foremost, to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the men and women we encounter through our ministry to seafarers, truck drivers and port workers in the Freeport Harbor Community.

Because of this, we sometimes give the impression that we never meet any Christians.  That's simply not true!  Whether on board a ship, in the cab of a truck, or in a warehouse at the port, we meet fellow Christians almost every day.  Many of these men and women are faithful and dedicated followers of Christ, they simply work in jobs that often prevent them from attending church regularly.  It is our great privilege to encourage and pray for and with these brothers and sisters in Christ.

Most seafarers sign contracts to be at sea for 10 months at a time.  Many of the truck drivers we've met only go home for a few days every other month.  This makes it very difficult for them to stay in close contact with other believers.  So, when they meet us they're always excited to be around other Christians.  Because of donations from churches, we have Bible study material that we can give to help encourage them in their walk with the Lord.

Hebrews 10:25 tells us, "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching."  Christian seafarers and truck drivers don't need to be reminded of the sweet Christian fellowship that is available to us at our local church.  They know all too well how easy it is to get discouraged, how much temptation is out there, and how difficult it can be to maintain a growing and healthy relationship with God completely on your own.  Christians need other Christians.  Texas Port Ministry needs Christians who are willing to share the love of Christ with people in the Freeport Harbor Community.
